If you have read any of my previous posts you might have noticed my intense passion for all sorts of hot sauces. So of course, when I found this hot sauce kit online I knew I needed to have it and and this kit did not disappoint!
Making hot sauce is something I’ve been dying to do for the past few years but I’ve felt intimidated by the process. Honestly, hot sauce is one of those things that seems really complicated to do, but in reality is pretty easy and cheap to make at home! But, this hot sauce kit just made it so much simpler to get started and has all the required materials and ingredients to make some good, high-quality hot sauce. This is a great gift for any home chefs or hot sauce aficionados, or maybe as a way to treat yourself (you deserve it!)

In the past, I have bought all my hot sauces from stores and through amazon, like Cholula, Sriracha, and some of the Trader Joe’s brand ones (the habanero one sure is spicy!). But, I found this kit online in one of those Buzzfeed holiday gift guide lists for home chefs, and I decided to treat myself!
I did know that ordering something from Amazon does have a high carbon footprint as well as come with some plastic packaging. But, it can be unrealistic to lead an 100% zero-waste lifestyle and the majority of the products in this hot sauce kit are reusable or come in compostable cardboard packaging. For instance, this kit comes with perfectly sized hot sauce jars that can be cleaned and reused for decades as well as a stainless steel funnel that can be used for multiple different purposes.
What comes inside
This hot sauce kit comes with a wide variate of spicy peppers including habanero, jalapeño, arbol, chipotle, and cayenne as well as 2 packets of an all-in-one spice blend. Also, the packaging for the dried peppers includes a rating of how spicy they are so that you can be sure that the hot sauce you’re making is in a spice range that works for you! There are also dried mangos for some more fruity hot sauces (I believe they have a recipe for a mango habanero hot sauce), a funnel, recipe book, and apple cider vinegar for making the hot sauces.
They have a great recipe book with instructions in how to prepare a wide range of hot sauces and how to handle the spicier peppers, making this kit great for any hot sauce beginners!
Ghost Peppers?!?!
This ~ultra-deluxe~ hot sauce kit comes with high quality dried peppers, including (gasp) GHOST PEPPERS!!! For those of you who do not know, ghost peppers are one of the spiciest peppers identified with a Scoville rating (basically a spice rating) of over 1 million. Just for reference, jalapeños typically range from 2,500 to 10,000 Scovilles, and let me tell ya, Jalapeños still pack a punch.
I was super excited to see that this hot sauce kit included these dried ghost peppers because they are extremely difficult to find in grocery stores or even online. The kit comes with a recipe for a ghost pepper hot sauce, and I can’t wait to give it a try! To be honest, I’m a little bit nervous of how spicy it’s going to be, but I’m planning on adding a tiny drop to a soup or something just to try it out! For any spicy food fanatics, this is the ultimate challenge!
Making the Hot Sauce
The hot sauce kit DOES NOT come with all the ingredients necessary to make hot sauce. For instance, you might need to get tomatillos, tomatoes, or canned tomatoes to make the recipes, and a blender is necessary to blitz up the hot sauce into an even and smooth consistency. But, the recipes look delicious and come with very clear instructions that guide you through the entire process.
So far, I have tried their Chili de Arbol recipe (pictured above) and it is absolutely fantastic! There is a freshness in the sauce that you never find in the store bought kind and a great balance of spicy, salty, and sweet. Also, i ended up using half of the dried arbol chilis from the hot sauce kit for this recipe and made two full bottles of hot sauce. So, you really are getting your money’s worth from this kit because it will provide you with at least a year’s worth supply of hot sauce (and that’s only if you’re a hot sauce addict like me).
When I finished, the color of the chili de arbol hot sauce (pictured above) did look a tad bit off from the pictures in the recipe book, but it still looked like hot sauce and tasted fantastic so I didn’t mind. My family members really loved it too and I can’t wait to try out some of the other recipes in their book!
