vegan chocolate oats

This rich, decadent, and luscious vegan chocolate oats recipe is so warm and comforting and truly feels like having dessert for breakfast! It can be made in less than 10 minutes, making it perfect for busy weekdays when you’re on a time crunch, and this recipe can easily be adjusted to make larger or smaller batches.

The Power of Chocolate

According to the American Heart Association, there are many benefits associated with the consumption of chocolate. While this doesn’t mean it’s beneficial to your health to stuff your face with chocolate candies (we’ve all done it before though lol), adding cocoa powder and enjoying dark chocolate every once in a while can make you healthier! It strengthens your heart, improves memory, improves mood, lowers cholesterol, helps with blood circulation and more! You can read more about this in this article here.

I know that nowadays, society has labeled foods as either being good or bad, but nearly any kind of food, within moderation, can be included in a healthy diet. Even chocolate! So if you’re craving some chocolate, go ahead and enjoy some or prepare this vegan chocolate oats recipe to satisfy that craving and boost your health!

The Best Oatmeal Toppings

You can top oatmeal with nearly anything your heart dreams of! To give you some inspiration, I like topping my oats with vegan chocolate chips, raspberries, strawberries, banana, pomegranate, extra cocoa powder, nut butters, seeds butters, nuts, granola, shaved coconut, a dollop of vegan yogurt, and/or a drizzle of maple syrup (agave syrup is also good on oatmeal). Trust me, oats are very versatile and can be adjusted based on your cravings and moods any day!

Ingredients

  • 2 cups preferred plant-based milk (see notes section)
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 3 tbsp cocoa powder, sifted
  • 1 tbsp chia seeds
  • 1 tbsp maple syrup
  • 1 medium banana, mashed
  • 1 cup old-fashioned rolled oats
  • 1 handful assorted fruit and berries to top (opt)

Instructions

  • Start by bringing the plant-based milk to a slow boil over high heat in a medium sized sauce-pan. Add in the salt, vanilla, cocoa powder, chia seeds, maple syrup, and banana, and stir everything to combine. Give the cocoa powder some time to dissolve and stir it until you no longer see any clumps of it. The liquid should still be boiling at this point.
  • Add in the rolled oats and stir it every couple seconds for 5 minutes. You should notice the oatmeal start to thicken up as the oats absorb more of the liquid. Once the 5 minutes have passed, turn off the heat and cover the saucepan with a lid to give them time to thicken even more for about 3 minutes, then serve and enjoy! I suggest topping this oatmeal with syrup, fresh fruit (like strawberries, blueberries, banana slices, etc), chocolate chips, a drizzle of nut butter, and/or some walnuts!
