More about the Vegan Tofu Tacos

I love to make this recipe because its so quick to make and tasty at the same time. Compared to plain tofu, this is so much better! Not that I have anything against plain tofu, but this recipe just elevates tofu to a whole new level! With tomatoes, spices, beans, and garlic, these Mexican inspired vegan tofu tacos are heaven on the taste buds. Plus, it all comes together in less than 30 minute!

I was trying to come up with a new vegan taco recipe that resembled the crumbliness of ground meat. By crumbling the tofu in my hands before cooking it, the tofu bits got crispy and delicious once cooked The appearance and texture is kind of like ground meat, but vegan of course and tastier, at least in my opinion!

Once I got the right texture, I started to play around with the flavors. I love spicy food, so naturally, the first thing I started adding was hot sauce! Then, I started adding my favorite spices as well, and then to give it more protein, I added some black beans beans.  I think that these tofu tacos are tastier than any meat taco I’ve had, but let me know in the comments what you think!  On top of being tastier, this is also so much healthier for you! Without the unhealthy fats in beef, these vegan tofu tacos are good for you and good for the environment too!

Its good for you … And the environment

green grass field and green tress during day time

According to a study conducted by the UN (which you can read more about by clicking here), the cattle industry produces more greenhouse gas emissions each year than all the cars, planes, trains, trucks, and ships in the world. That’s insane! Even if going completely vegan/vegetarian is not an option for you, it’s a great option to go meatless once in a while, even if it’s one day per week!  Not eating meat one day per week can have a much larger impact that one would think. According to this research study, if everyone in the US didn’t eat meat one day per week, the US would  save 100 billion gallons of water and 1.2 million tons of C02 over the course of a year.

What you eat really does make a difference, and if you want to learn more about the true cost of your food on the environment, you should check out my post here. Do yourself and the world a favor by going plant-based one day per week, and what better way to do it than with these tasty vegan tofu tacos!

Tofu Tacos

A flavorful, spicy, and tasty dish that brings in all the flavor a meat taco should have without the animal products that comes together in less than 30 minutes!
Prep Time10 minutes
Cook Time10 minutes
Total Time20 minutes
Course: Main Course
Cuisine: Mexican
Keyword: 30-Minutes, Budget-Friendly, Latin-American, Main-Dish, Tofu
Servings: 4
Calories: 267kcal

Equipment

  • medium/large sized bowl
  • medium saucepan

Ingredients

  • 1 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp chipotle chile paste or powder
  • 1 tsp cayenne pepper
  • 1 tsp chilli powder
  • 1 tsp ground cumin
  • 1 clove garlic crushed
  • 1 tbsp preferred hot sauce (opt)
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 14 oz extra firm tofu pressed (see notes)
  • 1 diced red bell pepper (opt)
  • 1 15 oz can canned tomatoes fire-roasted if possible
  • 14 oz black beans one can
  • ¼ cup nutritional yeast (opt.)

Instructions

  • In the medium/large sized mixing bowl, mix together the soy sauce, chipotle paste, cayenne pepper, chili powder, ground cumin, garlic, and hot sauce (if using) to form the marinade for the tofu. Using your hands, crumble up the tofu until the pieces of tofu resemble ground meat over the bowl, and mix the tofu into the marinade until it is evenly coated in the mixture.
  • Turn on your stove to medium-high heat under the pan and heat up the oil on the skillet before adding in the tofu and bell pepper if using. As you cook the tofu, continue to stir the mixture until the tofu starts to brown slightly and lose some of its moisture This should take about 5-7 minutes. Next, add in the canned tomatoes and black beans, and mix everything inside the pan. Cook everything together for about 5 minutes, or until the beans and tomatoes are cooked through. If there is some excess liquid, just turn down the heat to low and simmer the tofu tacos for about 5 minutes uncovered to allow some of the liquid to evaporate.
  • Once the tofu tacos are finished, serve them up in corn tortillas and with whatever taco fix-ins you enjoy. Enjoy the tofu tacos with sliced avocado, minced cilantro, diced jalapeño, vegan sour cream, hot sauce, and more!

Notes

To press the tofu, you can use a tofu press if you have one, or just wrap the block of tofu in a kitchen towel and place a heavy pan on top of the block for at least 10 minutes. If you are in a rush and you are making a recipe like this one where you crumble the tofu anyways, you can squeeze the block over the sink to remove as much liquid as possible.

I’ve not made this yet, I’m confused because the post mentions putting the tofu under the broiler but the recipe instructions don’t mention this step at all. Help please

Oh my goodness, I’m so sorry! I recently updated the recipe to make it less confusing and easier, so I removed the broiler step, but I guess I forgot to change that in the post. Just follow the directions in the recipe and you should be all good 😀
